This object was part of the aura that created the cult following of the Grateful Dead, and in that sense helped start a place out of time and space. I’ve always found this duplicity very interesting. Also the fact that it only existed for a few years but lives on in the pa sets of all summer festival stages, makes that I would have liked very much to have been able to see it, touch it… Anon.

The Wall of Sound was a huge sound reinforcement system designed in 1973 specifically for the Grateful Dead’s live performances. It was largest concert sound system built at that time but due to its size, weight and resulting expense, the full Wall of Sound was only used from March to October of 1974.

The painting is based on a photograph by Richie Pechner.
