Café Winkler, or Grand Café Winkler, was a restaurant opened by Hermann Winkler in 1946 on the Salzburg Mönchberg hill. It included a restaurant, a café, a concert hall and a bar. 4,000 people rode the old electric lift to attend its opening. It became a famous dance location and was featured in several films, including The Sound of Music. In 1972-3, the Café was renovated and part of it became the Salzburg Casino. By the end of the 1970s, Winkler had sold his last shares in the venture and the building was rebuilt and operated exclusively as the Salzburg Casino. It was demolished in 1998 in order to make way for the Museum der Moderne Salzburg. This painting is based on what appears to be a postcard of the Café before its renovation in the 1970s.
