Tynemouth, Northumberland, England, UK
Burned 1996
This place long predates me, but I used to visit this place as a kid as it was near where I went to school. Longsands, the beach it was built by, is one of Tessa and my favorites in the North East. Daniel D.
This building opened in 1878 as the Tynemouth Aquarium and Winter Garden overlooking the Longsands beach. The building’s name was changed first to the Tynemouth Palace in 1898 and then to the Tynemouth Plaza in 1926. It housed a changing variety of establishments during its history, including ballrooms, arcades, nightclubs, aquariums and indoor gardens. It was used to billet troops during World War 1. It was destroyed by fire in 1996. The painting is based on a photograph uploaded to Flickr by Geordiedave66.
