Flooded 1950s

The gardens of Ortachala
During my high school years, I would often come across Georgian poets, painters, and other cultural figures. My teacher always mentioned that many of the people who were—and still are—considered important to Georgian culture and identity knew this place, walked there, held meetings there, and spent time there before it disappeared in the 1950s.
The place was called Ortachalis Baghebi (“The Ortachala Gardens”), a beautiful island situated between the two channels of the Mtkvari River. It was lush and thriving, and much of the city’s fruit and vegetables came from there. There were lively taverns where Pirosmani painted many of his murals. Poets, musicians, composers, and artists would gather there, stroll through the gardens, and spend time together. Many of them mentioned this place in their works or created some of their most memorable pieces there. Unfortunately, during the Soviet era, the authorities decided to alter the two channels of the Mtkvari River. As a result, the island that had flourished in the middle of the river disappeared completely, along with the unique atmosphere and cultural life that had once made it so special.
I admire the hard work that people put into making this island an important part of the city’s culture, not only visually but also economically. I often imagine walking around the city and remembering that the people who lived in Tbilisi many years ago saw the same river, the same mountains, and perhaps even faced some of the same problems. What did they think? Of course, their works reflect their views of the city, but those reflections are often poetic and carefully crafted. What were their raw, unfiltered thoughts?I live near Ortachala, and ever since I learned that there was once an island in the Mtkvari River, I have found myself looking for traces of it whenever I pass by. I try to see something—an old wall, an old tree, anything that might give me a sense of what it was like when the place was flourishing and alive.
But now, where did all that hard work and beauty go? It disappeared beneath the water, which today is often dirty and foul-smelling. I suppose nothing has survived from that place. That is what fascinates and saddens me the most: an island that once played such an important role in the life of the city has vanished so completely that it is difficult to imagine it ever existed at all.
