Megatron was a space-themed restaurant founded by Danny Blundell in 1990, who hoped that the restaurant would be the first of a franchise. The building was designed by designed by architect Graham Campbell to resemble a UFO. Inside, innovative touchscreen computers allowed people to make their orders and there were regular laser shows and a cast of performers playing robots and aliens. The restaurant closed in 1993 and the building was taken overly McDonalds until it was demolished in 2008. The painting is based on a photograph by Karl Brockett who wrote an essay about if for Hunts Post.

Megatron was a flying saucer-shaped fast food restaurant that we went to as a treat when I was very young. It closed down, was turned into a McDonalds and was demolished in 2008. It seemed so exciting futuristic when I was 5/6 years old. I only have brief but vivid memories of it. You ordered food on touch screens and were served by robots! Daisy M.
