Kangaroo Island, also known as Karta pintingga (“island of the dead” in Kaurna), is Australia’s third-largest island. The island is one of South Australia’s most popular tourist attractions, attracting over 140,000 visitors each year, who come primarily to visit Flinders Chase National Park and the other nature preserves for which the island is known.Approximately 52% of the island (2,100 square km (520,000 acres)) burnt in the 2019-2020 bushfire season. Two people died from the fires and many wildlife species, some unique to Kangaroo Island and some already endangered, may be facing extinction as a result of habitat destruction. I don’t know where the photograph on which this painting is based came from.

Will it ever be the same? Another victim of the climate emergency. Anon.
