Apamea was an ancient Greek and Roman city located northwest of Hama, overlooking the Ghab valley.  Its ruins are the largest archeological site in Syria and included the nearly (1.2 mile) 2 km-long Great Colonnade and the largest surviving Roman theater. It suffered considerable damage from looting during Syria’s civil war while under the control both of Syrian government and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant forces. I don’t know who took the photograph on which this painting is based.
